| The National Opera named after Taras Shevchenko. |
Then Theatre Square abuts in Vladimirskaya Street. In 1869 it got its name
apropos of building of the city theatre. In 1965 the monument to the founder
of Ukrainian classical music, composer and conductor N. V. Lysenko (1842-1912)
was erected in Theatre Square. However the main zest of the Square is the
building of the National Opera named after Taras Shevchenko. Its inauguration
was realized with staging of the opera “Czar’s Life” by M. Glynka in 1091.
Engineered by the main architect of the Direction of Imperial Theaters academician
V. Shryoder the building of the theatre is noted for the great acoustics
of its auditorium. Cane and slabs of cork-tree were set in the walls to
aim such effect. Building of the theatre was finished in four years (see
more).

| The House of Teacher. |
Having crossed Bohdan Khmelnytsky Street, we find ourselves in front of
the Kiev House of Teacher (57Vladimirskaya Street). This bright building
is the most distinguished creation of the Kiev architect P. Alyoshin. The
facade of the building is coated with white incarman chalk-stone. The roundish
central part of the building is surmounted with glass dome. There is a hall
for five hundred persons under the dome. Building of the House (1909-1911)
was financed by the owner of lumber-mills S. Mogilevtsev. The original destination
of the building was “Pedagogical museum of prince Alexey”. Its inauguration
took place in October of 1912. The building is famous by the Ukrainian Central
Rada, founded in March of 1917 and led by M. S. Grushevsky, has worked here.

The House of Teacher has been situated here since 1982. In 1998 the monument
to the famed historical scientist and public character, chairman of the
Ukrainian Central Rada Michailo Grushevsky was set near the House of Teacher
.

Having passed the monument to Michailo Grushevsky, we get to Shevchenko
Boulevard. Let go to the right and continue our tour. The Boulevard was
founded in 30s of the 19th century. Its names were Boulevard Street, Highway,
University and, at last Bibikovsky Boulevard after the Kiev governor general
Dmytry Gavrilovich Bibikoff. Especial allure is given to the Boulevard by
the alley of the harmonic Lombardy poplars. At present Shevchenko Boulevard
ranging from Khreshchatyk to Victory Square is one of the most beautiful
ones in Kiev.

| Vladimirsky Cathedral. |
Walking down the alley of Shevchenko Square you’ll see a sheen temple surmounted
with golden crosses. It is Vladimirsky Cathedral. The original project was
worked out by the architects I. V. Shtrom and P.I. Sparro. Later it was
revised by the architect A. V. Beretti.

The cathedral poses a traditional ancient Russian six- columned and three-asp
temple. Its inner mural was realized by 96 painters such, for example,
as V. M. Vasnezoff, M. V. Nesteroff, M. A. Vrubel. Vladimirsky Cathedral
is situated at 20 Shevchenko Boulevard.

| The “Express Hotel”. |
and Michailo Kozubynsky Street a house (#36) remaining an old castle is
situated. Building of the house was financed by the rich Kiev pharmacist
Nykolay Frometta. The building was projected by V. Nikolaev of 26, who later
became academician of architecture. The chemist’s store functions on the
ground floor till nowadays. Walking down Taras Shevchenko Boulevard a little
bit further we get to the high 16-storied building. It is the “Express Hotel”.

on the ground floor. Here Kievites and guests of Kiev can buy tickets for
transit to all Ukrainian cities and abroad. The hotel was built during the
middle 80s and so has modernistic style. The “Express Hotel” is situated
at 38 Taras Shevchenko Boulevard . |
