| The alley of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard tending to
Victory Square. |
Walking down the shadowed alley of Shevchenko Boulevard we come up to Victory
Square. Sometime this place was considered an outlandish suburb. The beginning
of Jitomirskoe high road was here. In 1885 it was renamed as Kiev-Brest-Letovskoe.
Goods that were imported into the city settled partly on the area of present
Victory Square. In 1860 the market of clothes appeared here. Kievites started
call it as Jewish market (abridged Evbaz). It was believed by Kievites who
lived in Kiev in 50-60s that Evbaz was the name of all the streets abutting
on Victory Square.

In the middle of the square the obelisk to “Hero-city
Kiev” is set in memory of the great role of Kievites in the deal of making
a conquest of fascism. In 1960 a new building of the State circus of Ukraine
was inaugurated in Victory Square. It got its status of the State circus
of Ukraine in 1998. On the opposite side of the street the “Lybed Hotel”
and renovated building of the department store “Ukraine” are situated.
At present restoration of “Ukraine” is being finished. It is necessary
to note that expenditure of energy in renovated “Ukraine” will be equal
to expenditure of energy in such district of Kiev as Rusanovka. Illumination
of the department store will be realized with help of 11 thousands of
different lamps. Taras Shevchenko Boulevard ends in Victory Square, but
our familiarization with it is not still ended. Having seen the sights
of Victory Square (and buying on the side tickets to the circus for the
night performance), we continue our familiarization with Kiev.

And now we have to walk up Taras Shevchenko Boulevard
(fortunately we do not have to make any efforts except some actions with
“mouse”), discovering on our way new places of interests of the city for
ourselves. Thus on the right hand we can see Kominterna Street, tending
to the renovated building of the railway station.

At the crossing of Kominterna Street and Taras Shevchenko Boulevard the
equestrian monument to N. A. Shchyors who was the commander of division
of the Red army and died during the civil war, was set in 1954. There was
the monument to cout Bobrinsky some meters down the street in 1872. He has
remained in history as the manager of building of the first rail way tending
to Kiev. That is why his figure was faced the railway station.

Kominterna Street is followed by the botanic park named after the academician
A. V. Fomin that is situated opposite the monument to N. A. Shchyors.

It covers considerable part of the odd sight of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard.
Some specimens of palms grow in complex of greenhouses. In 1977 the greenhouse
that is the highest in the world - 30 meters high was built specially for
the palms. From the right of the entry to the botany park the clinic hospital
#22 is situated. Situated around the national University, it is resided
in the pavilion of the university clinics that started their work in 1885.

| Hospital #22. |
At the beginning of its functioning the clinic had the only one demerit
– that is summer holydays of students. So the clinic stopped its work for
the period of summer holydays. A great pleiad of native distinguished doctors
worked in the building of the clinic.
Having passed the clinic and having turned the right,
we get again to Vladimirskaya Street in front of the beautiful red building
of the Kiev Taras Shevchenko National University. The university was founded
in 1834 and originally was disposed in private buildings at Pechersk.
Building of the main pavilion of the university was started in three years.
The building of the university was projected by the notable architect
V. I. Beretti. On 23th of August 1834 class of the philosophical faculty
took place. Michail Alexandrovich Maximovich who was the professor of
botany became the first rector of the university. The memorial plaque
to Taras Shevchenko was set on the plinth of the fourth pillar in 1916.
In 1994 the most prestigious university of Ukraine got the status of national.
Such great pleiad of famous scientists and princes of culture were educated
intramural the university. Among them, for example, were microbiologist
and epidemiologist D. K. Zabolotny, mathematician N. G. Chebotarev, medic
and scientist N. D. Strajesko, writers M. P. Staryzky and M. A. Bulgakoff.

Opposite the main bulk of the University the monument to Taras Shevchenko
towers up in the recess of the park. The park was inaugurated in 1866 and
was named University park, but later it was renamed as Nicholaevsky park
(after czar Nicholay the First). In 1920 the monument to T. Shevchenko was
set in the park that got its present name – Taras Shevchenko Park. If you
have some time, call on here to rest in shadowed alleys of the park. But
if you are not tired, let continue our excursion. Here is finish of our
acquaintance with Vladimirskaya Street. Onward our rout will lie down Lev
Tolstoy Street where we come up having passed the building of the university. |
