At the beginning of the 19th century theatre life of Kiev perked very much. In 1806 at the cross-road of Khreshchatyk and Tryohsvyatitelskaya Street a wooden tow-storied building of the first City theater was built according to the project of A. I. Melensky. In 1821-1822 M. S. Shchepkin together with Russian-Ukrainian troupe appeared firstly before the lights there. Kieveties saw his appearances in the plays "Natalka Poltavka" and "Soldier wizard". In 1851 the building of the theatre was broken. In 1856 theatre performances were renewed in the new stone building of the second City theatre that was built according to the project of the architecture I. V. Shrom at the cross-road of Kadetskaya Street (later it had name Fundukleevskaya Street, now - Bohdan Khmelnitsky Street) and Vladimirskaya Street. The building was demised to different entrepreneurs for many years. Here drama, opera and ballet performances were shown. In 1896 the fire destroyed the building of the theatre. And during 1898- 1901 the new building of the theatre that preserved till nowadays was built according to the project of the architect V. A. Shreter in this place.
